Classical Weimar

World Heritage since 1998

On its Kyoto meeting in December 1998 the UNESCO World Heritage Comittee has inscribed the town of Weimar as 20th German site to the World Heritage List.

Two criteria have been the justification for inscription to the list:
  1. The high artistic quality of the public and private buildings and parks in and around the small Thuringian town testify to the remarkable cultural flowering of the Weimar Classical Period.
  2. Enlightened ducal patronage attracted many of the leading writers and thinkers in Germany , such as Goethe, Schiller, and Herder to Weimar in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, making Weimar the cultural centre of the Europe of the day.
